What courses is your crush taking this semester? It's the kind of question that crosses every college student's mind at some point. For me, it led somewhere unexpected.
The Curious Question
Late one evening, a random thought popped into my head: what courses is she taking this sem?
It was innocent curiosity. Nothing more. But there was a problem. Asking her directly would be painfully obvious. So naturally, I decided to try a different approach.
Maybe I could figure it out myself. Following a few clues here, checking a few things there. Just some light detective work.

The Discovery
What happened next surprised me.
It actually worked.
In less than an hour of poking around, I had her complete course history right in front of me. Every semester, every class. Mission accomplished, right?
𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡!!!
My immediate reaction was pure excitement. I wanted to jump up and share this discovery with my friends. Imagine the possibilities! Everyone could take a "Course with their Crush." The ultimate college hack.
The Uncomfortable Realization
But then something else dawned on me.
Something that wiped the smile off my face.
This wasn't just about her courses. It wasn't limited to one person's schedule. I could see course registrations for pretty much anyone at IIT Bombay.
Anyone.
That realization hit differently.
What I Learned About Privacy
Here's what struck me most about this whole experience:
"Turns out curiosity is sometimes all it takes to walk through a door that probably should have been locked."
We talk about privacy like it's all about encryption and firewalls and complex security systems. But sometimes? Sometimes privacy is just trust. Trust that nobody will actually try the door handle. Trust that even if it's unlocked, people will walk past.
I had tried the door. And it opened.
The Choice
So what did I do with this information?
It started as a random idea. A silly question about course schedules. It ended with me staring at my laptop screen, thinking about what this access really meant.
I closed my laptop.
Some things, I decided, are better left to fate.
The Aftermath
In case you're wondering: No, I didn't end up taking any course with her.
Turns out she takes heavy courses. Really heavy ones.
And me? I'm just a chill guy O_o
But this experience taught me something more valuable than any course selection strategy. It showed me how thin the line can be between casual curiosity and serious privacy concerns. How easy it is to stumble into data that should be protected. And how important it is to make the right choice when that happens.
Sometimes the most important decision isn't what you discover.
It's what you do after you discover it.
